UFCW Statement on Andy Puzder

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Marc Perrone, International President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), the largest private sector union in the nation, made the following statement about Andy Puzder being nominated to be Secretary of Labor.

“The Secretary of Labor’s top priority must be protecting America's hard-working men and women, not increasing corporate profits. Andy Puzder has been critical of raising the minimum wage and advocated for replacing workers with automated technology. If he is confirmed, the American people will expect him to protect American jobs and most importantly, all workers who have earned and deserve better wages, better benefits, and a better life.”

UFCW Statement on Amazon Go

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Marc Perrone, International President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), the largest private sector union in the nation, made the following statement about Amazon Go.

“Amazon believes that America's hard-working men and women are irrelevant to customers - they couldn't be more wrong. The amazing people who work inside grocery stores are more than neighbors and friends, they provide an invaluable and vital service.

“Those who work in our local grocery stores do a lot more than just ring people up at the register. They are professionals who advise customers about the right cut of meat, help them find the products they need, create expertly prepared meals and most importantly, can be trusted to ensure that everything bought in their stores is safe to consume.

“Amazon is masking its blind greed as progress. This is not about improving customer experience: It is about destroying good jobs, with no regard to the families and communities impacted. This is not the America that hard-working families want and deserve.”

President Speelman Receives Labor Press Leadership Award

Last night Local 1500 President Tony Speelman was among six honorees for the annual Labor Press Leadership Awards. Speelman was introduced and presented an award by UFCW International President Marc Perrone.

Speelman's remarks are below.

Thank you- Today, in such a divided nation unsure of its future - communication is more important than it has ever been.

Organizations like Labor Press are vital, and I mean vital to the millions of hardworking men and women throughout our state and country.

If we can’t rely on the mainstream media to properly cover an election without putting profits before effective journalism, how can we expect the media to cover stories that affect the true backbone of our country, America’s workers?

We can’t.

Our stories, the amazing stories of the hardworking men and women we are all so privileged in this room to represent, are rarely heard by people outside the audiences in rooms like these. They are given far below the attention they deserve.

Issues of fair pay – trade – health care – job security – building infrastructure the right way, with union jobs – affordable college education – raising our wages - pension reform - these are real issues we all face each day that are rarely sprinkled throughout news cycles covering scandals and outrageous quotes from elected officials.

That’s why what Neal and his team at Labor Press do each day is so important. That’s why I’m so honored to receive this award. The one thing we all take away from the election is the power of the media. The power of message – The more of our stories that are out there, the more people will hear the realities of what workers are going through and why we need ACTION from our elected officials, not just their rhetoric.

This is how we win. This is how we build a better country, community and movement for working people. Thank you very much for this honor and lets get to work.

Veterans Day

For the better part of a year the presidential election has split our nation in half. Though there is one thing we can all agree on: we are truly indebted to the service and sacrifices of all U.S. military veterans.

Our veterans are our sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles, mothers and fathers and cousins. They are our coworkers and our neighbors. They are all races, ethnicity's and come from all backgrounds. They are what makes this country so great.

As union-members, we have a responsibility to stand up for our co-workers, fight for our families and our communities. Many of our veterans are facing serious problems and I want to make it clear that our union family is committed to standing up for our veterans and their families.
 Acknowledging what these amazing men and women have done for our country is not enough. We must do more. In our upcoming contract negotiations our Union team will make a point to bargain for more benefits for the brave men and women who have proudly served our country.

The best way to honor our veterans on this day is to provide them with an opportunity to earn a better life. That is the least our employers can do.

The reality of having an anti-union, billionaire reality-star like Donald Trump elected president of the United States is sinking in. Our daily work and struggle to protect hard working families, jobs, rights and our communities will be an even greater task tomorrow then it is today.

We are eager to hold President-Elect Trump accountable on his promises to help build a better working class and support America's workers.

Election day is fast approaching.  Do you plan on voting? If you do, try to make a schedule and make sure you know where to vote tomorrow! Once in a while polling places change with little notification, so please double check your polling place and have a hassle free Election Day.

Hale & Hearty Workers Vote in Union

In a huge victory for working men and women in New York City, workers at Hale & Hearty’s commissary in Brooklyn, N.Y. banded together and voted last night to unionize. The 56 workers overwhelmingly chose to be represented by New York’s largest food workers union, United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1500.

Donald Torres, who has worked at the Hale & Hearty factory for 2 years said, “We all feel that we deserved better. We want to have a voice and to build a better life working here.”

Tony Speelman, President of the over 20,000 member UFCW Local 1500, said “I want to congratulate the hard working men and women at Hale & Hearty for joining us at Local 1500. Our entire union is proud of them and admires their courage. We look forward to building a relationship with Hale & Hearty, and working together to find ways to benefit workers and the company together.”

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 represents over 20,000 men and women throughout New York State.

Key goals for the union will be working with the company to enhance the lives of their newest members, provide them job security and secure a better level of benefits.

Dangerous Precedent

What happened to our elections? If he loses = voter fraud. If he if wins = lock up his opponent. Is that leadership? These threats are beyond dangerous and setting a precedent for the years to come which are just frightening. If Clinton wins, will she lock up her opponent or people who disagreed with her during this vile campaign season? Urgent Notice for Stop & Shop Members RE: Scheduling

Dear Stop & Shop member,

It has come to Local 1500’s attention that there have been some considerable changes in scheduling and that these changes pose a problem for many of our members.  During multiple conference calls this week, your Company explained the new ‘late-night’ schedule has already been established and expects Local 1500 members to work even later than previously expected. 

 

We are in the process of grieving these unilateral changes to your working conditions with your company and want every Stop & Shop member to know that LOCAL 1500 IS NOT IN AGREEMENT WITH THE NEW LATE NIGHT SCHEDULE.  We are working to resolve this matter as quickly as possible, and expect your full support during this process.

If you have a hardship caused by your new schedule, please contact your Union Rep ASAP, so that they can contact Stop & Shop and file individual grievances with specifics as well.

New Contracts Ratified

As our new union leadership brings new energy and different negotiation tactics to the bargaining table, we're excited to share the news that Fairway Drivers and Wild by Nature workers have ratified new contracts.

We're pleased to announce the hard working men and women of Wild by Nature have ratified a new long-term contract. Wild by Nature is a chain of five organic grocery stores located on Long Island. The new contract includes raises and secures benefits for both part-time and full-time workers.

The truck drivers for Fairway Market have also ratified a multi-year contract. The drivers are covered under a separate contract than men and women working throughout Fairway Market's 17 stores. Under the new contract a huge gain was made for Fairway Drivers, they will now receive pension benefits.

We're proud of the hard work done by both union negotiation committees to reach these contracts. Thank you all for your hard work.

Long Island Families Deserve Better

Today at Best Yet in Huntington Station, NY, as part of an ongoing effort to highlight hardworking people, and their desire for better jobs, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union launched a coordinated television campaign and grassroots effort to show why Long Island needs Best Yet and Best Market stores to change for the better.

"I have lived on Long Island my entire life, I know the real difference that a good job with better wages and benefits can make," said Steven Dozier, a Local 1500 member from Roosevelt who is part of the ad. "When Best Market grew, they didn't do it alone, their hardworking employees and their dedication are the real secret to Best Market's success. Best Market needs to change and do what's right, by providing our neighbors and friends with better wages and benefits so that we can all have have a better future together. We want Best Market to live up to their name and do what's best for Long Island families, they owe it to those who work hard everyday and to our communities."

The television ad campaign will run on cable channels and local broadcast news programs throughout the Long Island region for multiple weeks.

UFCW/RWDSU Locals 338, 342 & 1500 along with community groups like the Long Island Progressive Coalition, Long Island Jobs with Justice rallied in front of Best Market's Huntington Station store, demanding the company do better by their employees.

Shop Rite Contract Update

We are glad to report that all three Shop Rite companies (Glass, Mannix & SRS) have been engaging in faithful, fair bargaining with your Union negotiating committees.

The only issue that has come up is scheduling the next negotiating sessions.

Both company and Union officials remain confident a contract agreement will be reached, however due to various issues, including all three companies using the same attorney and Wakefern bargaining representative, scheduling negotiation sessions has been difficult. An SRS contract negotiation session was just scheduled for September 29th. However, the majority of negotiations will not continue until early October.

The most important takeaway: You will not be working without a contract.

All three companies are faithful and eager to negotiate a new contract. They have signed contract extensions and your rights and benefits are secured.

As the next negotiation dates are scheduled or any news breaks we will let you know. In the meantime please encourage your coworkers to sign up for email and mobile updates and please do not hesitate to contact your Union Representative by phone or email if you have any questions.

Why Workers Deserve Your Attention and Respect

While most Americans view Labor Day as the last long weekend of the summer and another day off work, this is the one day we should all stop for a minute and recognize the countless number of men and women across New York who make our community work. From workers at Stop & Shop to Fairway, these amazing people are dedicated and passionate, sacrifice for the good of others, and are committed to creating a better life for themselves and their families.

Jerome Gomez, a UFCW Local 1500 member working at Fairway Market, regularly donates blood to help his community. Or take a look at Georgette Wilson a UFCW Local 1500 members from Stop & Shop, who besides fundraising and walking each year for cancer charities like the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and the Light the Night Walk, she travels to Albany every year to fight for better legislation to help New York workers and to help her community. These are the true every day heroes of Labor Day.

While these stories may not be new, they are rarely given the media attention that a vacuous celebrity, lying athlete, or misbegotten politician can attract with a single tweet. While that may speak to a failure in our culture, we have opportunity on Labor Day to remember and acknowledge what this day is truly about. It’s about workers. It’s about real people. In fact, the the history behind this misunderstood holiday was actually a result of one of the most intense and violent struggles for workers’ rights.  

In 1894, during a time of severe economic and social unrest, thousands of workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest the way George Pullman, founder and president of the company, treated his workers. To put down the strike, Pullman gained the support of President Grover Cleveland, who ordered federal troops to intervene—leading to a bloody confrontation and the deaths of more than 30 Pullman workers. Soon afterwards and amid growing criticism of the brutal response to the striking workers, President Cleveland established Labor Day as a national holiday in an effort to appease organized labor.

It’s been 122 years since the Pullman Strike, and our country is still grappling with economic divisions and social unrest.

Today, millions of hard-working Americans are struggling like never before in low-paying jobs with erratic schedules and little to no benefits.

It is the sad reality that, in addition to stagnant wages and incomes, too many of America’s workers face dangerous workplaces, exploitation, and mistreatment every single day. Many are also too afraid to reach for a better life because of threats from an irresponsible employer or they are conditioned to believe that they have not earned the opportunity for something more.

Here in New York, hard-working men and women who choose to become part of a union family soon realize they need not struggle alone. In Westbury UFCW Local 1500 represents workers at Stop & Shop, Food Bazaar, Tops Markets, Fairway Market, Key Food, Gristedes, D’Agostino, ShopRite, King Kullen and PeaPod.

Whether someone is a union member or not, the fact is that no one in America should have to struggle alone. Every hard-working person deserves a better life because they’ve earned it.

This Labor Day and in the days leading up to Election Day, we have a responsibility to speak out for each other and our communities. We can start by honoring the sacrifices working people here in New York City that have made to our shared prosperity of New York and this country.

Yet, if we are really going to change this nation for the better, it must begin with all of us realizing that Labor Day is not about one last summery day. Rather, it’s about the day where we all realize the power we have to come together and define a better future for all hard-working families.

Wild By Nature Contract Update: Agreement Reached

—WILD BY NATURE CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE —

 

 

We are pleased to report your Union negotiating committee has reached a tentative agreement with Wild by Nature. Thanks to your support, the negotiating committee has worked hard to come to an agreement you can be proud of.  The next step is reviewing and voting on the agreement.

At the vote you will receive a tentative agreement which you will be able to review. Your Union Representative and negotiating committee members will be present at each voting location to answer your questions. The Union negotiation committee unanimously reached this agreement and unanimously recommends to accept the new contract.

 

It is very important that you participate in the voting so that you may ACCEPT or REJECT the company’s last proposal for the new contract. Please encourage your coworkers to read the tentative agreement and vote on Sept. 8th!

Labor Day Art Contest Winners Announced!

We received so many wonderful submissions for the first-ever UFCW Labor Day Art Contest, so it was a difficult choice to pick three winners.

Jeff Moser of Local 324 submitted the winning artwork for the contest. Congratulations to Jeff, who wins a $500 Visa gift card. Congratulations, as well, to the two runners-up: Nancy Bacon of Local 75, and Tiffany Siebuhr of Local 324 – they’ll receive $50 Visa gift cards.

UFCW Debuts Union Label for Cannabis Products

Perma, a recreational cannabis producer-processer in Tacoma, Wash., is proudly declaring that their products are union made with a new a UFCW label. The workers at Perma are members of UFCW Local 367, and made history in June of this year as the first recreational cannabis producer-processor in Washington state to join a union. The UFCW union label will be attached to Perma’s AK-47 and Gorilla Glu products.

“This label will help customers choose a quality product that is made by my hard-working coworkers with the quality of jobs we want in the state,” said Janie Wallace, one of the processors at Perma.

Labor Day Art Contest!

Every year, we celebrate Labor Day to honor working people and all their contributions to our country and its middle class. The UFCW is made up of hard-working men and women who serve in our communities at retail and grocery stores, meatpacking and processing plants, and countless other facilities across multiple industries.

This year, the UFCW International is hosting its first ever Labor Day art contest, to celebrate working people with something made by working people! UFCW members and their children are eligible to enter an original work of art to be in the running for a $500 Visa gift card AND have their artwork framed and displayed at the DC labor Fest in the fall! The winning piece will also be available for all UFCW locals and members at our online UFCW Store.

Two runners up will receive $50 Visa gift cards, as well. To enter, send us a high resolution photo image of your art at www.ufcw.org/contest. Your submission must have a Labor Day theme. The deadline to submit is August 25th, and winners will be notified by August 29th.
