Obama visits Kroger, Wine in Grocery stores gets another push in NY, Thursday One Liners...

President Obama spoke about Health Care with UFCW membes at a Kroger in Virginia yesterday.

Here comes another push for wine in grocery stores here in New York:
Legislation has been introduced in both the New York state senate and assembly to allow wine in grocery stores, after a similar proposal was cut from the state budget last spring amid complaints from liquor store owners, according to published reports.

A Chicago City Council committee today voted to kick the controversial plan for a South Side Wal-Mart store to another committee.

Wal-Mart has filed an injunction against the UFCW Canada, alleging the UFCW should not be permitted to use the word Wal-Mart!?
The suit would force the UFCW to stop using words like "Wal-Mart alone or with other words...in a color scheme of blue, white and gold" which is similar to that adopted by Wal-Mart Canada. The injunction seeks to bar the UFCW from using such words or symbols on its website, business cards, flyers or advertising. The company has included in its injunction "an oval, circular or semi-circular design that adopts the essential characteristics and color scheme of Wal-Mart's Rebranded Indicia

“Walmart’s response to the success of www.walmartworkerscanada.ca is just another outrageous example of how the largest retailer in the history of the world will use its bottomless legal budget to manipulate the collective bargaining process and do just about anything to discourage its ‘associates’ from joining the union.”

The Bloomberg Administration will officially unveil its long-awaited plans to rezone Coney Island on Tuesday.

"We believe that the combination of our effort and the change in the economy has led to a situation where there are not immediate efforts to close the store," said Patrick Purcell, spokesman for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500, which represents 100 employees at the store. "We're thrilled with what's happening."
More and more retailers are seeking relief in NYC.

Aldi comes to NYC, Millennium Market opens another store, Happy Birthday A&P

The police in Nassau County, New York released a report this week that clearly lays the blame for a Black Friday
trampling death on Wal-Mart.

Wage violations in NYC Supermarkets, Wal-Mart finally unionizes in Canada (again), Buying Sustainable fish at your grocery store...

370 underpaid New York City grocery workers will be paid $750K. The owner of the three stores in violation Long Deng, owns stores throughout the metropolitan area. The three supermarkets that were cited for wage violations are:
  1. New York Supermarket East Broadway at 73 East Broadway in Manhattan
  2. New York Supermarket of Flushing at 43-53 Main Street in Flushing, Queens
  3. New York Supermarket at 86-22 Broadway in Elmhurst, Queens

After more than four years of legal wrangling, the Wal-Mart store in Weyburn, Sask., has been officially unionized.

Wal-Mart Shuts down another Unionized Store...

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's biggest retailer, said it closed a unionized Quebec tire and lubrication shop because of costs tied to the first labor agreement imposed at any of its North American locations.

Citing "an unworkable union contract" that increased costs by more than 30%, Wal-Mart Canada on Thursday closed the Tire Lube Express automotive center at its discount store in Gatineau, Quebec.
