Report: Foul Ball, Walmart is potentially eying a site across the street from Citi Field.

The Gothamist is reporting that the initial report of Walmart @ Citi has no merit. 

The community in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, has been fighting against a Walgreens replacing their only grocery store.  Yesterday Marty Markowitz joined 200 community members protesting in front of the shuttered grocery store.
"We have shown that it is possible for many years for this community to support a supermarket here," Councilman Brad Lander, D-Park Slope, told the agitated crowd assembled near the increasingly decrepit storefront at 589 Prospect Avenue.

What We're Reading Today: Monday, July 30th

A big last few days for Supervalu, they fired their CEO Craig Herket today, replacing him with Wayne Sales.  A few days prior a federal judge denied class-action status to retailers pursuing antitrust litigation against Supervalu and C&S Wholesale grocers after a 2003 asset swap.

In honor of the July 24th marking the last time the federal minimum wage was raised three-years ago, AlterNet looks at 7 big corporations raking in massive profits while paying their workers peanuts.   Walmart rakes in at number 2.

And here's 5 good reasons why raising the minimum wage is good for you and me.

Whole Foods says their decision to open in smaller cities is paying off.

Rite Aid workers in SoCal are positioned to strike after rejecting the companies latest contract proposal.  The UFCW members voted to authorize a strike.

UFCW Local 1776 and Rite Aid have reached a tentative agreement on new labor contracts covering about 2,600 workers in the company’s stores in Greater Philadelphia, the Reading area and Northeast Pennsylvania.

 The hearing on the expansion of a NJ Walmart will be June 2nd.

Local 1500 represented King Kullen in St.James is seeking expansion.

Mayor Bloomberg's new budget will layoff thousands of teachers.

UFCW and Smithfield are continuing their Hunger Tour, donating 228,000 servings of protein to the Alabama tornado victims.

In Ohio, Local 880 Rite-Aid workers have been on strike looking for a new contract from the company.

BJ's Wholesale Club saw an increase in sales in April.  Target saw double-digit increases in sales but were disappointed.

Target is continuing their grocery expansion, by end of 2011 they'll be revamping 850 stores.

Grocery is not the only thing Target's expanding on, CEO Gregg Steinhafel's salary increased 83% last year, yeah that's not a typo, eighty-three percent.

Whole Foods saw their best Q2 results in 5 years....They're also opening their first Chicago store.

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

UFCW Local 1657 Endorses Shelia Smoot in U.S. Congress Race
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1657 announced its endorsements of Shelia Smoot in her bid as the Democratic candidate to represent Alabama's 7th Congressional District in the upcoming November elections. 

Labor unions are expected to spend generously this election year to support some initiatives, oppose other, and unseat a few lawmakers. 

UFCW, activists and labor groups to alert shoppers at supermarkets nationwide that Mott's is new poster child for corporate greed. 

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555 will hold a "Freedom Solidarity Shop Week" July 5-12 at various Fred Meyer stores to support non-food employees who have been bargaining for months for a new contract. 


Labor unions in Chicago struck a deal to allow Wal-Mart to expand throughout the city, but unions in New York aren't so willing to budge. 


Every Chicagoan should know by now that Wal-Mart, who currently only has a single store in the city limits, plans to open about thirty new stores. 

A Michigan man has sued Wal-Mart Stores Inc for firing him after he tested positive for medical marijuana he was using legally to treat pain from an inoperable brain tumor and sinus cancer. 

Eduardo Castro-Wright, who was once seen as a candidate for chief executive of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., has been replaced as head of Wal-Mart's United States operations. 


The Bank of Wal-Mart has come to step closer to reality. Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s Sam's Club unit is running a pilot program with Calif.-based Superior Financial Group to offer small business loans of $5,000 to $25,000. 

CHICAGO- A private equity firm that has invested in several retailers has taken a 9.5% stake in BJ's Wholesale Club Inc and said it might propose taking the warehouse club operator private.

Rite Aid Workers Rally at Calif. Distribution Center for Good Contract
More than 75 Rite Aid workers from the Southwest Distribution Center in Lancaster Calif. marched off the job during their lunch break this week to join supporters from dozen of other unions demanding that Rite Aid management negotiate a good contract. 

Striking workers at the Shaw's supermarket warehouse in Methuen, Mass., are gaining the support of political, community and religious leaders and union members across New England. 

CLINTON, NJ-- At ShopRite's official opening day last week, customers entering the doors to the new store in Clinton received free balloons for the kids, a single serving of Cheerios from an animated Lucky Charms, a Price Plus Club card for additional savings, and coupons. 

A Wegmans store in Germantown would mean lower prices and more choices for consumers, according to developers working with the New York grocery chain. 

Wegmans Food Markets in Woodbrige celebrates its students employees receiving scholarships through the Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program. Since the annual program began 27 years ago, Wegmans has awarded more than 24,000 of its employees with scholarships totaling more than $77 million. 

Challenge to Wegmans Liquor License to be heard by Woodbridge Council
WOODBRIDGE- VA- Township officials and the Wegmans supermarket are gearing up for a debate next month over local and state liquor license rules as the chain seeks to allow customers to buy liquor at its township store.

Citing confusion in the marketplace, Whole Foods Market Inc. is cracking down on organic standards for personal-care products.

The Super Stop & Shop supermarket on Jerusalem Avenue in North Bellmore closed Monday night temporarily for a major renovation. The pharmacy will remain open during construction. 

Bison meat is being recalled by a Colorado company over concerns about possible E. Colu contamination, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department. The USDA said the recalled bison meat was sold to stores nationwide between May 21 and May 27 and some people may have already been sickened. 

SOUTH DEERFIELD, Mass.- Mixixe, a Brazilian relative of the cucumber is relatively unknown in the U.S., but it may one day be as common as cilantro as farmers and consumers embrace more so-called ethnic vegetables. 

Eco Friendly Shopping Bags Are E Coli Risk: Going Green May Make You Sick
A study done University of Arizona found at least 50% of consumers' reusable shopping bags tested had E. Coli on them. Most bag owners never even wash the eco-friendly bags, making them a harbor for bacteria. 

SAN DIEGO, CA-- A billing banning single- use plastic bags in California passed another hurdle last week and now moves on to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Negotiations continue, and no actual strike has been called. But the voting that finished Friday gives the negotiators of Local 1500 of the United Food and Commercial Workers union the OK to call for a work stoppage.

Friday Morning News: Target Grocery is a hit.

Aldi Inc. is being sued by more than 200 current and former store managers in 32 states over unpaid overtime wages, in a lawsuit alleging the discount grocer violated the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, the Wall Street Journal has more.

Crain's is reporting another big Bronx bakery will be shut down: Old London Foods, a maker of Melba toast and other crispy snacks, will shutter its plant in Morris Park, resulting in the loss of 228 jobs

Union workers at Albertsons, Fred Meyer and Safeway stores here have reached a tentative agreement with the chains on a four-year contract.

A recommendation to permit the sale of wine at grocery, a $1 per pack cigarette tax increase, and a penny per ounce tax on sugared beverages linked to obesity are part of the Executive Budget proposed by New York Governor David Paterson Tuesday.

New Yorkers Against Unfair Taxes, a coalition formed to oppose taxes on food and beverage products, has expressed its “disappointment” regarding New York Gov. David Paterson’s proposal to place a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages of 12 cents per 12-ounce can in the 2010-2011 Executive Budget. According to the group, which includes many of the Empire State’s grocery store operators, as well as convenience stores and industry associations, the tax would be 10 times higher on a 12-pack of nonalcoholic beverages than the state tax on a 12-pack of alcoholic beverages like beer. Paterson proposed the nondiet soft drink tax as part of an effort to close the state’s $7.4 billion budget deficit.

New York City unemployment spikes to 10.6%.  

The Star-Ledger writes another article how Walmart's new supermarket in North Bergen, New Jersey will affect grocery shopping habits:
"When it comes to her weekly grocery shopping, Priscilla Restrepo follows a two-part routine: Pathmark for fresh produce, Target next door for packaged food...But yesterday's two-stop grocery run just might have been her last.  Today, just one mile down the road on Tonnelle Avenue, retail giant Wal-Mart is opening its first grocery supercenter in North Jersey - a sprawling 24-hour store, roughly the size of four football fields, which will offer everything from lawn chairs and game consoles to fresh meat and warm baked goods."
They also report that the early reviews of the store are great.

Meanwhile, Supermarket News reports Target's "P-Fresh" prototype store which carries more grocery items, has lifted shopper frequency “as never before,”
In remodeled stores with the new, expanded P-fresh food departments, sales and traffic are up an average of 6% 12 months after the remodelings, he said, which translates into 1,000 extra trips per store per week, or gains of $4.5 million at minimum per year.
Due to these statistics, The Wall Street Journal reports Target is slamming the brakes on store expansion and will pour $1 billion this year into remodeling its existing shops to accelerate a push into groceries.

BJ's in Red Hook, Trader Joe's in Brooklyn Opens today, Eli Zabar and the energy tax...Friday Morning One liners...

Two former Pathmark Executives were hired by Rite Aid:  Rite Aid Corp., the third-biggest U.S. drugstore chain, hired new operating and finance chiefs after reporting its fifth straight unprofitable quarter and widened its projected loss for the year.

Fresh Direct is offering groceries and produce at a discount to the entire South Bronx.

Rite Aid Corp. has agreed to pay New Jersey up to $650,000 to settle a lawsuit charging that dozens of its stores in the state sold expired infant formula, baby food, and over-the-counter medications.

Unions plan to rally in favor of the contentious $3 billion Willets Point redevelopment on Thursday at City Hall, as the Bloomberg administration moves closer to getting approval for the project. Last week, the city reached land-purchase agreements with three businesses, but several landowners still oppose the project that will develop housing, retail business, a hotel and convention center on 62 acres in northeast Queens. The public review process has begun, and Community Board 7 held a public meeting last week.

The prospect that Barack Obama will face labor troubles at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August is increasing.

A&P here yesterday released a summary of year-ago financial results from Pathmark Stores, adjusted to conform with A&P’s financial calendar and to conform with A&P accounting practices.
