Second Contract Extension Signed with Stop & Shop, King Kullen...Deadline: Nov. 2nd

October 11, 2013:  Negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covering over 10,000 UFCW Local 1500 members working for Stop and Shop and King Kullen Supermarkets and Pharmacy have been ongoing now for months.

Our Union negotiators felt it was important to sign another extension through November 2, 2013, so we may continue to remain patient while thoroughly reviewing every option and every issue the ACA has created. Our committee is doing everything we can to resolve the difficult issues and cost increases created by this new Federal law.

Maximus Coffee Workers Strike in Houston to Protest Company’s Plan to Slash Benefits

The UFCW International just released a statement regarding over 250 workers (mostly UFCW member) going on strike to protest company plans to reduce wages & benefits, increase premiums and eliminate overtime.  This is outrageous, we stand with our union brothers and sisters at Local 455.

Houston Texas: Over 250 Maximus Coffee Group workers in Houston, a majority of who are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) Local 455, went on strike this morning to protest the company’s plan to reduce wages from 25 to 50 percent per hour, reduce retirement benefits, increase insurance premiums, and eliminate overtime pay. Maximus Coffee Group’s U.S. headquarters is located in Houston.
“Maximus Coffee workers in Houston are simply trying to protect middle class jobs and their benefits after working hard to make their company profitable,” said UFCW Local 455 President Bill Hopkins.
“I hope this strike sends a strong message to the company and moves the negotiation process to a successful conclusion.” “I’ve worked at this plant for 41 years and for Maximus Coffee since 2006 when they purchased the plant from Maxwell House,” said Robert Barnes. “I haven’t gotten a real raise since 2009, and don’t know how I’ll be able to support my family if my wages and benefits are reduced.”

UFCW President Hansen Statement on President Obama Re-Election

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Joe Hansen, International President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), yesterday released the following statement regarding the reelection of President Obama.
“President Obama’s reelection is a victory for UFCW members and workers across the nation. The President stabilized a failing economy, put in place new rules to prevent another financial crisis, and made important investments in the middle class. He reformed health care, made college more affordable, and helped guarantee women equal pay for equal work.
“There is much more to be done in a second term. It is time for immediate and bold action to create good-paying jobs. It is time for a tax code that is fair and helps close the gap between the rich and the poor. It is time to strengthen our labor laws so workers can join a union freely and fairly. And it is time to reform our immigration system so those who work hard and play by the rules can become American citizens. Only then can we truly recognize the President’s vision of shared prosperity and shared sacrifice.
“Achieving these goals will require leadership by President Obama. But he also needs a partner in Congress. Tea-party legislators tried—and failed—to defeat the President at any cost, calling it their top priority. I hope they will now put as much effort into addressing the great challenges facing our nation.
“The American people have spoken. It is time to get to work on their behalf.”

Alert: Notice to all UFCW 1500 Members Working for A&P/Pathmark

United Food and Commercial Workers

From Local 1500 President Bruce Both:

Notice to UFCW members working A&P-owned Supermarkets:
September 14, 2012

The leaders of UFCW and RWDSU Local Unions representing members at A&P/Pathmark and all A&P-owned supermarkets became aware today of a possible layoff plan that could impact our members.

This announcement comes after we were given commitments and assurances by the operational people of A&P that based on our concessions there should not be any further store closings or layoffs.

We believe that the push for increased operational savings comes from the investment bankers seeking, in all likelihood, to speed up the rate at which the bankers would recoup their investments.

We believe further that the funds raised through the sale of Food Emporium would not be put back into operations, but rather, will go to the investment bankers to reduce the loans that were made to the company on their behalf.

All union members at A&P have already sacrificed for this company, through concessions and our hard work. And, together, we will stand strong to rebuild the company – even when that means mobilizing against any threats to our members’ livelihoods.

We call upon you to join with your union brothers and sisters to stand together in solidarity.

Your input in your stores and with your union representatives is crucial. Your commitment sends a strong message to the company that we will not sit back and let them cut jobs or violate commitments to it workers.

What We're Reading Tuesday Morning: Amish Market gets Busted...Again

“But we believe that workers deserve a paid day off to care for their self or their loved one, without the risk of losing wages or being terminated. Paid sick days should be a basic workplace standard for all New Yorkers.”
-UFCW Local 1500 Recorder Rhonda Nelson, in Paid-Sick-Leave Fight Escalates in NYC, Expands Across the Nation via In These Times.

Target's PFresh remodels (yeah the one that closed the Valley Stream store for 7-months) are popping up all over the country, but no others are closing for that extended period of time, weird.  Here's a complete list of all their scheduled re modelings.

A few years ago UFCW Local 1500 was contacted by workers at Amish Market, we eventually helped win nearly $1.5 million in back-pay & unpaid overtime wages for a handful of workers at the chain of stores.  We knew these employers took advantage of their workers, but this week federal authorities charged the nine owners  w/ conspiring to hide $56 million in sales from the IRS.  Stealing wages from low-paid workers, hiding millions from the IRS, way to go guys!  More @ Supermarket News.

16 miles from NYC, Walmart eyes it's first Neighborhood Market in Jersey.

And their express city format store has failed. Walmart plans to close their Chicago Express store, one year to the day that it opened.  Talk about #WMTFail, they said they couldn't survive with a Supercenter nearby.  More @ Chicago Tribune.

Shake Your Head Story: Despite earning a record $4.9 billion profit last year, and projecting a better 2012, manufacturing giant Caterpillar is pushing a six-year pay freeze on workers and a pension freeze for most of the 780 production workers.  But miraculously they did find a way to raise executive compensation including giving CEO $17 million.  Check more @thinkProgress.

Here's a great and chilling editorial in the NY Times on Walmart suppliers: Forced Labor on American Shores.
The workers said the company forced them to work 16- to 24-hour days, and 80-hour weeks, at illegally low rates, sometimes locked in the plant, peeling crayfish until their hands felt dead. Some were threatened with beatings.

Save a Life...Donate Blood!

Follow Tony Speelman
@Aspeel1500 on twitter
By: Anthony Speelman
Secretary Treasurer, UFCW Local 1500

People donate blood for many reasons.  For me, I've seen the benefits of what blood donation has done for my family members first hand.

Blood centers throughout New York are in desperate need of our help. The reality is scary, supply levels are at a dangerous 1-day supply of blood.  There couldn't be a more important time than now to donate blood and help the thousands of New Yorkers who need blood in order to survive each day.  Last year we were able to donate over 100 pints of blood to the NY Blood Center.  This year we've set a goal to exceed last year's mark and need your help!

Join us this Wednesday,  July 11, 2012,  from 2-8 PM for our annual Blood Drive at our Union Hall (425 Merrick Ave. Westbury NY 11590).  We'll be hosting a free BBQ for all donors, volunteers and families to say thank you for helping save a life.

Please RSVP today by calling 516-214-1354, emailing info@ufcw1500.org, or RSVP online at our Facebook page.  Thank you for your help and support!

3 Reasons Why Target is on Federal Trial

Target has been awfully hopeful many people would be quick to forget about why the retail giant who until this summer, never saw bad PR, is currently sitting in front of a federal labor board judge in Brooklyn, NY.

It all started years ago, when Target execs made a decision to put profits ahead of people.  The choice was simple for them, sales continued to climb and they even began to compete with the retailer who was once dubbed 'untouchable', Walmart.  They've always been looked at as a better employer than Walmart, but it took 12 workers from a store outside of New York City who were tired of being disrespected and being treated like pawns, not people, to bring the truths about Target to light.  Working for them is no different than working for Walmart, in fact it could actually be worse.

So if you can get past their propaganda, flashy ads and cheap prices, here's three reasons Target sits before a federal labor board judge this week.

Target used this van to transport workers
to vote "NO" on election day
& get a free lunch!

1. Illegal Surveillance of Workers who wanted a Union
Target employees wanted a union, but management made union supporting feel almost criminal like, they actively encouraged the surveillance of 'pro-union' employees. They even told employees to call the police if union Organizers came to speak to them.
From Crain's NY Business:
The labor board also decided the retailer unlawfully created the impression that workers' union activities were under surveillance and that supervisors told workers they could not solicit on behalf of the union in non-working areas, said Alvin Blyer, the regional director of the labor board.
2.  Interrogation of Workers Who Wanted a Union
So what comes after illegal surveillance? Obviously interrogation! From Crain's:
The labor board also found sufficient evidence to add charges that supervisors interrogated workers about their union activity and told them they could not solicit on behalf of the union in non-working areas, said Alvin Blyer, the regional director of the labor board.

3.  Intimidating Workers to vote against the union.
From handbills which questioned if the store would close 'if the union got in', to captive audience meetings where they told employees the store would close and they wouldn't have a job (nice).  If that weren't enough, they shoved corny anti-union propaganda (like this video) down the throats of employees...every day.

If that wasn't enough, Gawker sums up how Target's image was tainted from the June election,  and more importantly gives you worker testimonials (or 'soul-sucking stories) from Target workers throughout the country on what it's really like working for the bulls-eye.

It's summed up nicely here by Pat Purcell, Assistant to the President of UFCW Local 1500:

“There was only one way for Target to win this election, and that was to break the law.”

United Food and Commercial WorkersImage via Wikipedia
A message from the UFCW International

Yesterday 13 UFCW local unions met with A&P management in initial contract negotiations. The meeting marked the beginning of the bargaining process with the company that seeks to find solutions to the problems the company is facing.

Our goal is for A&P to emerge from bankruptcy healthy enough to serve customers and support good jobs in as many communities as possible. Yesterday’s meeting was a very initial exchange of information.

If you have any questions about the negotiations or bankruptcy process and how it might affect you and your coworkers please attend your local union’s next general membership meeting (June 8th @ 7:30) or ask your union representative.
