President Speelman Receives Labor Press Leadership Award

Last night Local 1500 President Tony Speelman was among six honorees for the annual Labor Press Leadership Awards. Speelman was introduced and presented an award by UFCW International President Marc Perrone.

Speelman's remarks are below.
Thank you- Today, in such a divided nation unsure of its future - communication is more important than it has ever been.
Organizations like Labor Press are vital, and I mean vital to the millions of hardworking men and women throughout our state and country.
If we can’t rely on the mainstream media to properly cover an election without putting profits before effective journalism, how can we expect the media to cover stories that affect the true backbone of our country, America’s workers?
We can’t.
Our stories, the amazing stories of the hardworking men and women we are all so privileged in this room to represent, are rarely heard by people outside the audiences in rooms like these. They are given far below the attention they deserve.
Issues of fair pay – trade – health care – job security – building infrastructure the right way, with union jobs – affordable college education – raising our wages - pension reform - these are real issues we all face each day that are rarely sprinkled throughout news cycles covering scandals and outrageous quotes from elected officials.
That’s why what Neal and his team at Labor Press do each day is so important. That’s why I’m so honored to receive this award. The one thing we all take away from the election is the power of the media. The power of message – The more of our stories that are out there, the more people will hear the realities of what workers are going through and why we need ACTION from our elected officials, not just their rhetoric.
This is how we win. This is how we build a better country, community and movement for working people. Thank you very much for this honor and lets get to work.

Walmart to Close 269 Stores - Over 10,000 U.S. workers affected
154 stores will close in the United States, including their entire 102 Walmart Express small-format stores.

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
WHAT'S NEWS THIS WEEK:
In court documents filed this week, A&P said Acme had offered $1.3 million for the leases of closed A&P stores located in Patterson, N.Y., and Boonton, N.J., as well as a wine and liquor store in Old Greenwich, Conn.
Welcome our newest brothers and sisters, @HuffPost, the largest digital media outlet to unionize. What's better? Management's response: "Assuming a majority, we will recognize the union," she continued. "We look forward to a great relationship with our union as we work together to take The Huffington Post to new heights across the world."

Scheduling has become the number 1 issue in our new economy.
The family-owned and operated chain of convenience stores and gas stations announced plans to devote upwards of $15 million to increase employee wages across the board. The company states in a press release that it’s doing so without cutting back on employee hours.

“We believe that paying wages at the upper end of the retail scale is necessary to achieve that goal.”
This week President Perrone announced the UFCW's endorsement for President of the United States. “We announce this endorsement with the full belief that the frustrations felt by the American people are real, and that they deserve an America where better wages and better benefits are enjoyed by all who help make this nation great."
This week the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association. The case pits the right of public employees to band together and form effective unions to pursue the common interests of workers against the free speech rights of dissenting public employees to abstain from funding collective bargaining efforts with which they disagree.
This major case will change the landscape for unions in our country forever; all union members must pay close attention.
This month in 1914, Henry Ford doubled the wages of his production workers to  $5 a day.
Adjusted for inflation, that would come out to $118.67 in 2015 dollars, almost $15 an hour for an eight-hour day (in 1926, Ford Motor became one of the first major corporations to adopt a five-day, 40-hour workweek). This applied to male workers and was extended to women in 1916.
New calculations quantify how much the decline of unions contributes to economic inequality.
Three mergers between enormous grocery chains will change our entire industry. They've created three new super chains that now employ over 1 million people in America. Mergers and the emergence of technology are having a dramatic effect on workers lives.  President Both sums up how our union and industry needs to react.
Elsewhere & Out there:
Environment: If you haven't heard, Flint Michigan has an enormous water problem and now people are dying due to a 'cost-saving' measure. A federal probe has just been announced to investigate.
via Washington Post: The city of Flint, Mich., is in the midst of a water crisis several years in the making. The city opted out of Detroit's water supply and began drawing water from the Flint River in April 2014, part of a cost-saving move. Eighteen months later, in the fall of 2015, researchers discovered that the proportion of children with above-average lead levels in their blood had doubled.
PHOTO OF THE WEEK

“Everyone has a hard on for the union. They think we’re lazy or this or that, or maybe that there’s mafia influence, but honestly I just think they don’t like the little man having a voice. More and more construction sites are non-union these days. Nobody wants to pay $30 an hour plus benefits if an immigrant will do the same job for $14 an hour. And if everything goes non-union, I might as well go work at McDonald’s because I’ll be making the same amount of money. If the union collapses, I’m going to lose my pension. The way pensions work-- each generation pays for the previous generation. So without a new generation of union workers, there’s not going to be any money left for me. And I’ll have to work until I die.”
Thank You:
It's often a thankless job, so we'd like to say, thank you. And thank you for being a subscriber.

Tentative Pension & Welfare Deals Reached with Stop & Shop, King Kullen

After a nearly 24-hour Pension & Welfare negotiating session that began yesterday at 9:30 AM, our negotiating team reached a tentative agreement with Stop & Shop and King Kullen on Pension & Welfare.

Negotiations with both companies will resume Wednesday on wages and other economic issues.

Our team is fighting every second of the day to try and secure not just "any contract" but the best contract we can.

During this time we all need to stick together.

You must try to avoid buying into any management rumors or attempts to undermine this process and our union.  Any attempts to separate our union membership must be met with a unified response that we are all together.

We need to support one another now more than ever, so again, thank you, for your patience.  Everyone should know that the last thing we ever want to do is to create an economic hardship for any of our members, your communities or your loyal customers.

If you aren't already, please follow our Facebook and Twitter where updates are posted regularly throughout the day.

Stop & Shop Negotiations Update #14

Update from Yesterday's (Nov. 13th) Negotiations with Stop & Shop:

UFCW Region 1 Director, Rich Whalen, and Federal Mediator, Carlos Tate, were present during our negotiations yesterday.  Some progress was made by both sides through the negotiation session.
Please remember that the obligation of your negotiating committee is to examine all available options during negotiations before making any final recommendations to the membership to vote on.

This obligation becomes even more significant when the committee is debating a recommendation that could result in a work action.  The longer we work without a contract (or an extension) the more likely it is that you will see contingency plans from both sides become public.

Your union leadership and staff have been preparing for some time to be ready for any ultimate decision that we may face, we expect that Stop & Shop has been doing the same thing.

Please continue to go to work every day, and keep your Union Representative informed of anything unusual at your store.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact us by replying to this message or contacting your Union Rep.

Next Pension and Welfare Trustee Meetings are scheduled for: 11/19, 11/21 and 11/25.

Next scheduled contract negotiating session is 11/22.

Continue to check our Facebook and Twitter, and Contract page for most up to date info or actions, and to engage in negotiations conversations on our Facebook Page.

Walmart Workers and Supporters Plan for Largest Mobilization Since Black Friday

As calls to rebuild the economy with better jobs reverberate across the country, Walmart workers and their supporters announced the largest mobilization since Black Friday, set for Thursday, September 5.

The announcement comes as Walmart has failed to meet a Labor Day deadline to reinstate illegally fired and disciplined workers and publicly commit to improve wages and jobs. Thousands of workers and their supporters plan to protest on Thursday in over a dozen cities across the country.

Since June, Walmart has illegally disciplined nearly 80 workers, including fi ring 20 worker-leaders. More than 100 Unfair Labor Practice charges have been fi led with the NLRB against Walmart.

“Walmart, we cannot wait any longer for you to do the right thing for American workers. Our jobs should not be at risk when we speak out about improvements that would help our families and Walmart customers,” said a Cindy Murray a Walmart worker who was recently arrested for protesting at Walmart’s Washington, D.C. offices.

“Walmart cannot silence our concerns,” said Brandon Garrett a former Walmart worker who was illegally fi red after going to Walmart’s annual shareholders meeting. “Our fight to get Walmart to publicly commit to providing better jobs is not just about improving the lives of our families. It’s about improving jobs for all American workers and for strengthening the economy for all of us.”

There are several ways to help support Walmart workers as they take action on September 5.

UFCW Local 1500 leadership and our 23,000 members are standing in solidarity with our 33,000 brothers and sisters working at Stop & Shop, represented by UFCW Locals 328, 371, 919, 1445, and 1459 during contract negotiations still continuing ongoing.

“All of us in the UFCW must stand with the New England Locals and help them secure the best possible contract for their members,” said Secretary-Treasurer Anthony Speelman Even though negotiations were still taking place, Stop & Shop choose to place ads in newspapers seeking to hire replacement workers in the case of a strike or lockout as a scare tactic.

“The threat to hire replacement workers by Stop and Shop always has and always will fail to scare or divide UFCW members in any part of the Country,” said Speelman “ I guarantee you that any attempt to do that in Local 1500’s negotiations this Fall will be met with a forceful response from the New York State labor movement.”

Members can show their support for the new England Stop and Shop workers by sending a tweet @UFCWUnited, visting them at http://ufcwstopandshopnegotiations.com or liking them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/UFCWStopShopNegotiations

Release: UFCW 1500 files Complaint with NY DOL Against A&P

NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 13: A person walks in...Image by Getty Images via @daylifeFor Immediate Release to UFCW Local 1500 Members

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union Local 1500 has filed a complaint with New York State Department of Labor against the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P), the parent company of Pathmark Supermarkets, alleging violations of the New York State W.A.R.N. Act. The W.A.R.N. Act is a State law that outlines a company’s legal obligations to employees when they announce the shutdown of their operations.

UFCW Local 1500 announced the complaint after repeated attempts to resolve the issue with A&P/Pathmark executives. “Our Union will continue to drive home the point that it is the workers that will lead A&P out of its financial troubles. However, they have a both a moral and legal obligation to do all they can for employees that are being impacted immediately by this bankruptcy,” stated Bruce W. Both, President of UFCW Local 1500.

UFCW Local 1500 Secretary-Treasurer Anthony Speelman emphasized the Union will continue to use all means necessary to enforce the contract and make sure appropriate authorities hear the voices of the workers. “Whether it is the Federal Judge overseeing the bankruptcy or Federal and State agencies such as the Department of Labor, our Union will continue to speak loudly on behalf of our members. The men and women working in these stores are not responsible for this company’s financial mess and we will do everything we can to make sure the A&P/Pathmark does not attempt to build it’s future solely on the backs of our members.”

For more information on the A&P/Pathmark bankruptcy, please continue to follow UFCW Local 1500 on Facebook, its website www.ufcw1500.org or by contacting the Union at 1-800-522-0456 or by email at info@ufcw1500.org. Pathmark members should also stay in contact with their designated Union Representative.

Local 1500 Objects to A&P's bid for Bonus Pay Outs

www.freshobsessed.com/entIdeas/pricelist2004Re...Image via Wikipedia

On Thursday, March 3, 2011, UFCW Local 1500 along with Creditors and Trustee’s objected to the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.’s bid to pay out $6.8 million in bonuses for their “key employee retention plan”.  A&P’s ‘retention plan’ asks for a loan of $6.8 million to pay 146 non-union employees, $1.76 million of that going to their top four executives.   The plan could allow the four senior executives to earn 175% of their base salaries while providing 100% bonuses for other participants.  Local 1500 is shocked A&P made this request since they have yet to establish a one-year business recovery plan.   We valiantly oppose their bid for a bonus plan and urge A&P to focus on rebuilding their historic company.

Local 1500 Secretary-Treasurer Tony Speelman expressed his frustration; “Their plan is to take care of the executives who brought them to their current bankruptcy state right now.  Our members are insulted and saddened that A&P continues to focus on short-term goals like paying executives rather than creating a solid, sound business plan to bring this company back to the top of the grocery industry. “

Today, both the Wall Street Journal and the Dow Jones Daily Bankruptcy Review, wrote about Thursday's objection to A&P's 'Employee Retention Plan'. please follow the links above and read them.

We will be discussing Pathmark/A&P and much more at our next General Membership Meeting, March 9, 2010.  For questions or comments please contact your union representative, or email us at info@ufcw1500.org.

A Message from President Both; Re: Pathmark

                                                                                    February 28, 2011

A&P announced last week that the company would close 32 underperforming stores in the chain’s network of stores.  Every UFCW member is affected by this announcement in one way or another.  Together, the 14 UFCW local unions who represent workers at the chain’s 395 stores are working diligently to put UFCW members in the best possible position for whatever the future holds for this company.

The UFCW A&P local unions have retained financial analysts and bankruptcy attorneys so that our interests are represented in the bankruptcy proceedings. UFCW leaders sit on the creditor’s committee.  By committing to a unified approach, every UFCW local union is operating from the same position – that together, we are stronger.

We are facing a lengthy process and encourage you to have patience.  Last week’s store closing news was a shock, but as a group, the UFCW was able to respond similarly in every location by using the existing collective bargaining agreement to protect as many jobs as possible.  Several hundred Teamster brothers and sisters have lost their jobs as a result of A&P’s management decisions during this process. You may have seen them protesting the company at your store or stores in your area.  Talk to your union representative about the best way you can show your support.

If you have any questions about the bankruptcy process and how it might affect your store, please attend your next General Membership meeting on March 9, 2011 (RSVP on Facebook), or ask your union representative at (800) 522-0456.

Yours truly,
Bruce W. Both
President

Monday's One Liners: Walmart on 6th Ave? Really?

Supermarket News reports that retailers throughout New York met last month to receive more information on how to get publicly supported grants and loans that would help them build or improve stores in underserved neighborhoods in New York state — so-called “food deserts” that lack access to fresh foods.  We need to get the message out to our unionized operators to take advantage of these opportunities.  Stop & Shop opened in Far Rockaway last month receiving grants and loans in program similar to this.
